Aztecs baseball gets swept against Central Arizona

The Pima Community College baseball team (21-18, 14-14 in ACCAC) lost a pair of games on Tuesday against Central Arizona College on Tuesday at the West Campus.

Brandon Burke (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the day 2 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) went 5 for 8 with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 1: Central Arizona College Vaqueros 9, Pima CC Aztecs 7 (7 innings):

The Aztecs rallied in the late innings but fell short in the first game 9-7. Down 9-4 in the 6th inning, Burke hit a two-run home run to make it 9-6. Stine hit an RBI single in the 7th inning to score pinch runner David Oropeza (Nogales HS) but that's as close as they would get. Burke went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Oropeza was 1 for 2 with two runs scored. Stine finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Roy Aguirre (Douglas HS) took the loss (5-2) as he pitched four and two-third innings giving up nine runs (nine earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) pitched the final two and one-third innings with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Central Arizona College Vaqueros 8, Pima CC Aztecs 3 (9 innings):

The Aztecs had to play catch-up again but couldn't close the gap as they lost 8-3 in the second game. Central scored four runs in the 2nd inning and took a 7-1 advantage after the top of the 4th inning. Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) hit an RBI double in the 4th inning and an RBI single in the 6th to make it 7-3. Tarantola went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Stine was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Burke finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Marcus Catalano (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) took the loss (4-5) as he pitched three and one-third innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will play at Arizona Western College on Saturday in a conference doubleheader in Yuma. Games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
