Figueroa Fans 10 as Baseball Earns Split Against Cochise College

The Pima Community College baseball team (24-16, 12-14 in ACCAC) earned a split at the West Campus on Saturday against Cochise College (26-14, 13-7) in an ACCAC doubleheader.

Game 1: Cochise College Apaches 7, Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs surrendered six runs to the Apaches in the first two innings as they struggled to put together a rally.

Sophomore Francisco Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) led off the fourth inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Aztecs on the board. Freshman Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to plate sophomore Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS), who led off the inning with a single.

Larranaga was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a walk. Rodriguez went 1 for 3 with a run scored while Ramsower finished 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Freshman Andres Hackman (Empire HS) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound (6-1) as he went three and two-third innings giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Kristian Samorano (Tucson Magnet HS) shut out Cochise in the final three innings with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Cochise College Apaches 2

The Aztecs broke open a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning and held off a Cochise College rally in the end.

With the game tied at 1-1, sophomore pinch runner Adrian Lucero scored from third on a wild pitch. He pinch ran for Rodriguez, who led off the seventh inning with a single. Freshman Myles Moran and Larranaga hit RBI singles in the inning to make it 4-1. Cochise scored one run in the eighth inning.

Larranaga was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the first inning and finished 2 for 3. Moran went 1 for 3 with an RBI and freshman Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Miguel Figueroa (Tucson Magnet HS) picked up the win (2-6) as he pitched seven innings giving up two runs (two earned) on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Ernesto Romero (Salpointe Catholic HS) picked up his first save throwing the final two innings with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will play at Central Arizona College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader in Coolidge. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
