Ramirez's walk-off and Mendez's run cap Aztecs baseball sweep over Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (7-2, 2-0 in ACCAC) picked up two dramatic wins to open ACCAC conference on Saturday against Scottsdale Community College (8-4, 0-2).

Sophomore Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) and freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) became big parts of Pima's wins at the West Campus. Sophomore Ernesto Romero (Salpointe Catholic HS) and freshman Troy Gutbub (Catalina Foothills HS) picked up the wins on the mound in relief appearances.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2: Ramirez hit a walk-off RBI double in the seventh inning to win it for the Aztecs. Freshman Martin Garcia (Tucson HS) and sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Tucson HS), who hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning, scored the game-winning runs.

Garcia scored the first run of the game on an error in the fifth inning. The Aztecs fell behind 2-1 in the sixth inning after a two-run homer.

Ramirez finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs while Garcia went 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Larranaga was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Romero picked up the win (1-0) as he pitched the final one-third inning getting the Scottsdale batter to fly out. Sophomore Trevelle Hill (Tucson HS) was on his game as he threw five and one-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2: Down 2-1 in the ninth inning, freshman Jared Kromminga (Empire HS) scored on a throw after Garcia's single to tie it. Freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS), who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch to win the game in another exciting finish.

Ramirez put the Aztecs on the board and tied the game at 1-1 after he hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Larranaga in the sixth inning. The Artichokes went up 2-1 with a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning.

The Aztecs managed five hits for the game. Ramirez went 1 for 2 with an RBI while Mendez was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Garcia finished 1 for 3 with a run scored and Larranaga was 0 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.

Gutbub picked up the win (1-0) as he pitched the final one and one-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on one hit with two walks. Freshman Jose Contreras (Tucson HS) started the game and pitched three innings giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Freshman Gage O'Brien (Catalina Foothills HS) threw two and two-thirds giving up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Romero went two innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play at GateWay Community College on Tuesday in Phoenix. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
