Aztecs baseball posts lucky-sevens in sweep vs. Vancouver Island University club

The Pima Community College baseball team (9-7) earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep on Friday at the West Campus against the Vancouver Island University club team.

Freshman Carlos Mada (Nogales HS) had a great day at the plate going 3 for 6 with four RBIs. Sophomore Andres Hackman (Empire HS) and freshman Austin Treadwell picked up wins on the mound and the bullpen combined for six innings giving up no hits with eight strikeouts.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Vancouver Island University Mariners 0: The Aztecs scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning while pitchers Hackman and Jonathan Deeble (Sahuaro HS) combined for a shutout.

Sophomore Erick Migueles (Canyon del Oro HS) put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI single that was followed by freshman Logan Klunder's sacrifice-fly RBI to make it 2-0. Migueles scored on a passed ball to cap off the inning.

Mada hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and Klunder came through again with a two-run RBI single to plate freshman pinch runner Marco Prieto (Pueblo HS) and sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS).

Klunder finished the game 1 for 2 with three RBIs while Larranaga went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mada was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Migueles went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Hackman, a sophomore, started the game and picked up the win (2-0) as he pitched four innings giving up three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Deeble, a freshman, earned the save as he closed out the final three innings with no hits and three strikeouts.

Game 2:  Pima CC Aztecs 7, Vancouver Island University Mariners 3: The Aztecs rallied in the fourth inning scoring five runs to take the lead for good. They loaded the bases with no outs and tied the game when sophomore Shawn Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) scored on a passed ball. Freshman Jesus Solis (Nogales HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) to make it 4-3. Mada followed with a two-run RBI double to plate freshman Jared Kromminga (Empire HS) and Solis. Sophomore Anthony Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) capped it off with a sacrifice-fly RBI.

Mada finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs as he also produced an RBI single in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Kromminga was 0 for 1 with two walks and two runs scored. Solis went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Mendez finished 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Treadwell picked up his first win of the season (1-0) as he pitched four innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Troy Gutbub (Catalina Foothills HS) picked up the save after pitching the final three innings giving up no hits with five strikeouts.

The Aztecs get right back to ACCAC conference play as they travel to Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday for a doubleheader. The first game starts at noon.
