Contreras tosses gem as Aztecs baseball earns split at Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (10-8, 3-6 in ACCAC) competed in a pair of tightly contested games at Paradise Valley Community College (13-7, 5-5) on Saturday in Phoenix.

The Aztecs dropped the first game but bounced back with the help of starting pitcher Jose Contreras (Tucson HS). Sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) was also productive at the plate as he went 3 for 6 with three RBIs, a run scored and two walks.

Game 1: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 5, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs cut Paradise Valley's lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning but the Pumas scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Aztecs managed one run in the seventh inning as their rally was halted.

Larranaga went 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks. Sophomore Shawn Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) finished 1 for 3 with an RBI while sophomore Anthony Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) was 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Sophomore Erick Migueles (Canyon del Oro HS) drew two walks.

Sophomore pitcher Trevelle Hill (Tucson HS) took the loss (1-3) as he went three and one-third innings giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Isaac Lopez (Nogales HS) pitched two innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 1: The offense provided just enough as the pitching did the rest to get the Aztecs the win and the split.

Larranaga finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs while freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Migueles finished the game 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. He hit a solo home run in the game.

Contreras, a freshman, started the game and picked up the win (2-0) as he pitched six and one-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. Lopez earned the save as he closed out the final two-third innings with one strikeout. Freshman Gage O'Brien (Catalina Foothills HS) threw two innings with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will host Chandler-Gilbert Community College at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday. The games will be at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m.
