Migueles homers but Aztecs baseball drop doubleheader to Chandler-Gilbert CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (10-10, 3-8 in ACCAC) dropped an ACCAC conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium to Chandler-Gilbert Community College (13-7, 9-3).

Sophomore Erick Migueles (Canyon del Oro HS) had a good day at the plate going 2 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.

Game 1: Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 6, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs took an early lead with a run in the first inning but the Coyotes responded with five in the second inning. The Aztecs scored two runs in the seventh inning before their rally was cut short.

Sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) led off the game with a walk and scored later in the inning.

In the seventh inning, Migueles scored on a wild pitch and freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) hit an RBI single to plate sophomore Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS), who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Migueles was 1 for 2 with a run scored and two walks while Mendez finished 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Ramirez went 1 for 3 with a run scored. The Aztecs drew seven walks in the game.

Sophomore Miguel Figueroa (Tucson HS) took the loss (1-2) as he pitched four innings giving up five runs (five earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 12, Pima CC Aztecs 5: The Aztecs took a two run lead after the first inning but the Coyotes took command with nine runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the eighth.

Migueles put Pima ahead with a two-run home run to also score freshman Martin Garcia (Tucson HS). Freshman Logan Klunder hit an RBI double later in the inning to score Ramirez to make it 3-1.

Ramirez hit an RBI single in the seventh inning and freshman Jesus Solis (Nogales HS) also had an RBI in the inning.

Garcia finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs scored while Migueles went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ramirez was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Klunder went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Freshman Gage O'Brien (Catalina Foothills HS) took the loss (0-1) in a relief appearance after he went two-thirds of an inning giving up four runs (four earned) on four hits. Sophomore Taylor Ferdinand started the game and pitched five innings giving up five runs (none earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus on Saturday when they host Glendale Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
