Larranaga's four RBIs, O'Brien throws five scoreless innings in baseball's split vs. Monroe CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (12-16) played a non-conference doubleheader against Monroe Communtiy College on Tuesday at the West Campus field.

Sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) had a great day at the plate finishing the day 4 for 7 with four RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Gage O'Brien (Catalina Foothills HS) pitched five scoreless innings in his start.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, Monroe CC Tribunes 2 (7 innings): The Aztecs struck with three runs in the first inning and helped close it out with six runs in the fourth.

Larranaga hit a two-run RBI single in the first inning scoring sophomores Anthony Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) and Erick Migueles (Canyon del Oro HS). Fellow sophomore Manny Ramirez drew a walk in the inning and later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.

The Aztecs poured it on in the fourth inning. Freshman Carlos Mada (Nogales HS) capped off the inning with a two-run RBI single to score freshman Logan Klunder and pinch runner Jesus Solis (Nogales HS).

Larranaga hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Klunder went 3 for 3 with a run scored while freshman Austin Treadwell was 2 for 2 with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Mada went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Migueles was 1 for 3 with two runs scored. The Aztecs also drew eight walks in the game with Ramirez and Felix each with two.

O'Brien picked up the win (1-1) as he started the game and threw five innings giving up no runs with one hit, eight strikeouts and five walks.

Game 2: Monroe CC Tribunes 7, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Tribunes scored three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth to hold on.

Down 1-0, Migueles tied the game in the first inning when he scored on a wild pitch. The Aztecs trailed 5-1 in the fifth inning but cut into Monroe's lead with two runs.

Ramirez and Larranaga hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-3 but Solis struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Aztecs left 10 runners on base.

Treadwell started the game and took the loss (1-1) after he went four innings giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with one strikeout and three walks.

The Aztecs will play a single make-up game against Mesa Community College on Wednesday at the West Campus. The game will be at 2:00 p.m.
