Aztecs baseball draws 13 walks but get swept vs. Central Arizona College

The Pima Community College baseball team (17-23, 8-20 in ACCAC) created opportunities to overtake Central Arizona College (27-14, 11-10) but could not close it out in the end.

The Aztecs dropped their second straight ACCAC doubleheader against Division I schools. Sophomore Miguel Figueroa (Tucson HS) went 4 for 8 at the plate with four RBIs. Sophomore Ernesto Romero (Salpointe Catholic HS) pitched five and one-third innings in relief giving up one run (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

Game 1: Central Arizona College Vaqueros 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6 (7 innings): The Aztecs trailed 7-5 in the seventh inning and loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Erick Migueles (Canyon del Oro HS) was hit by a pitch which scored freshman Jared Kromminga (Empire HS). Sophomore Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) and freshman Kyle Rivera (Tucson HS) struck out to end the game.

Figueroa hit an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1 and again at 2-2 in fifth inning with another RBI single. He scored on freshman Marcus Mendez's (Desert View HS) RBI single to give Pima a 3-2 lead.

The Vaqueros scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 advantage. The Aztecs cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth. Migueles hit an RBI single and Ramirez had an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Figueroa went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Mendez finished 2 for 4 with an RBI while Kromminga was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks. Migueles finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. The Aztecs drew four walks in the game.

Figueroa started the game and took the loss (2-6) after he pitched five and two-third innings giving up six runs (four earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Romero pitched the final one and one-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on three hits.

Game 2: Central Arizona College Vaqueros 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6 (9 innings): The Aztecs loaded the bases in three innings including the ninth but Ramirez grounded out with two outs to end the game.

Down 5-0, the Aztecs scored three runs in the fourth inning. They loaded the bases with one out as sophomore Shawn Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI single and later Migueles hit a two-run RBI single. In the sixth inning, Ramirez hit an RBI single to score Bracamontes to cut it the deficit to 7-4. The Aztecs drew three straight walks in the eighth inning and Figueroa came through with a two-run RBI single.

Migueles finished the game 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run scored and three walks while Bracamontes went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Jesus Solis (Nogales HS) was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two walks and Figueroa went 1 for 5 with two RBIs. The Aztecs drew nine walks for the game.

Freshman Jose Contreras (Tucson HS) took the loss (4-2) as he started and pitched three innings giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Isaac Lopez (Nogales HS) threw two innings giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with one strikeout. Romero pitched the final four innings giving up three hits with five strikeouts.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday at Arizona Western College. The ACCAC doubleheader will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
