Moraga tosses shutout as Aztecs baseball sweeps El Paso CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (8-2) earned a doubleheader sweep on Saturday against El Paso Community College. The Aztecs took three of the four games for the trip.

The Aztecs got standout pitching performances from freshman Adam Moraga (Sunnyside HS) and sophomore Troy Gutbub (Catalina Foothills HS). Sophomore Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) finished with nine RBIs in the last four games.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 2, El Paso CC Tejanos 0 (7 innings): Moraga (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a complete-game giving up two hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 71 pitches.

The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Mendez hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score freshman Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS), who hit a leadoff single.

Freshman Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score freshman Matthew Hackman (Empire HS) in the 7th inning. Hackman hit a one-out single to get on base.

Padilla went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Porchas and Hackman each finished 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, El Paso CC Tejanos 2 (9 innings): Gutbub (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after he threw five and two-third innings giving up one run (none earned) on three hits with 10 strikeouts.

Mendez hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning and an RBI double in the 7th inning to finish 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Sophomore Juan Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning and also had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 7th to plate Mendez. Durazo finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Padilla finished 1 for 3 with three runs scored and two walks while Hackman was 2 for 5 with an RBI double in the 4th inning.

The Aztecs open ACCAC conference play next Saturday, Feb. 10 when they play at Scottsdale Community College in a doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
