Wong throws gem and Durazo homers as Aztecs baseball earns sweep at Glendale CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (14-10, 6-8 in ACCAC) claimed its first ACCAC conference sweep of the season on Saturday at Glendale Community College (13-12, 9-5).

The Aztecs got great outings from their starting pitchers and freshman Juan Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) came through in the clutch for a struggling offense.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 1, Glendale CC Gauchos 0 (7 innings): Freshman Michael Wong threw a one-hit shutout to improve to 2-2 on the season. He pitched a complete game giving up one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk on 82 pitches.

Durazo led off the 3rd inning with a solo home run to break the tie. He finished 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Wong went 1 for 3 as the Aztecs managed just two hits for the game.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 6, Glendale CC Gauchos 2: The Aztecs struck first in the 2nd inning and used a four-run 7th to help pull away.

Freshman Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) hit a two-run RBI triple to score sophomore Jesus Solis (Nogales HS) and freshman Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS).

With one out in the 7th inning, Durazo hit an RBI double to score sophomore Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS). Later in the inning with bases loaded, Porchas hit a two-run RBI single to score freshman Sergio Gonzalez (Nogales HS) and freshman Elisandro Diaz (Salpointe Catholic HS) to make it 5-0. Freshman Matthew Hackman (Empire HS) drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to cap off the inning.

Sophomore Troy Gutbub (Catalina Foothills HS) picked up the win (2-0) as he pitched five and two-thirds of shutout baseball. He gave up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs play their third straight road conference doubleheader on Tuesday at GateWay Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
