Cummings finishes with six RBIs as Aztecs baseball sweeps Phoenix College

The Pima Community College baseball team (14-5-1, 5-2-1 in ACCAC) picked up its second straight ACCAC sweep on Tuesday as it beat Phoenix College (9-9, 2-6).
Freshman Cole Cummings took care of business at the plate as he finished the day 4 for 8 with six RBIs and a run scored. Starting pitchers Adam Moraga (Sunnyside HS) and Conner Nantkes were on display yet again with some quality innings.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Phoenix College Bears 2 (6 innings): Cummings hit a two-run RBI single in the 6th inning to give the Aztecs a run-rule victory.
    The Aztecs broke the game wide open with seven runs in the 4th inning to take an 11-2 lead.
    Sophomore Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) cleared the bases with a three-run RBI triple and later scored on a balk to make it 10-2 in the 4th. Freshman Karl Koerper had two at-bats and produced two RBIs singles in the inning.
    Cummings broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run RBI single in the 2nd inning to give the Aztecs a 4-2 lead. He finished the game 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored.
    Sophomore Phillip Sikes put the Aztecs on the board with a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. He was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
    Porchas went 1 for 3 with three RBIs while Koerper was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Richard Ware drew two walks and scored two runs and sophomore Matthew Hackman (Empire HS) scored three runs.
    Moraga, a sophomore, picked up the win (3-0) as he pitched all six innings giving up two runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks on 83 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Phoenix College Bears 1: The Aztecs rallied with three runs in the 2nd inning and Nantkes and Juan Pablo Ruedaflores (Flowing Wells HS) did the rest on the mound.
    Sophomore Jacob Jacome tied the game with an RBI single to score freshman Brian Romero (Canyon del Oro HS). Hackman scored from third on a passed ball later in the inning and Cummings hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Koerper to make it 3-1.
    Sikes led off the 8th inning with a single and later scored on a passed ball.
    Sikes was 2 for 4 with a run scored while Cummings finished 1 for 4 with an RBI. Jacome went 1 for 2 with an RBI.
    Nantkes, a sophomore, got the win (2-2) as he pitched seven innings giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Ruedaflores, a freshman, picked up his first save of the season as he threw the final two innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Saturday when they play an ACCAC Division I doubleheader at Eastern Arizona College. First pitch is at noon.
