Sikes, Bryan and Porchas provide highlights as Aztecs baseball sweeps Yavapai College

The Pima Community College baseball team (32-14, 18-11 in ACCAC) earned its third straight sweep on Saturday as it picked up another huge doubleheader victory on the road.
The Aztecs defeated Yavapai College (29-13, 19-11) in Prescott to win their sixth straight game. The Aztecs have won nine of their last 13 games including an ACCAC Division I sweep on Tuesday at Central Arizona College.
Sophomore Phillips Sikes went 5 for 7 at the plate and picked up his fourth save of the season. Sophomore Austin Bryan (Sahuarita HS) threw another gem while fellow sophomore Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) went 5 for 8 on the day with an RBI and three runs.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Yavapai College Roughriders 1: Bryan pitched a complete-game giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks on 97 pitches. He improved to 9-1 on the season.
    The Aztecs displayed patience on the base paths as Sikes tied the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning. He singled with one out, stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout. He would score on a balk.
    The Aztecs took the lead at 2-1 in the 5th when sophomore Richard Ware and Porchas both hit singles. Ware scored from third base on a passed ball.
    The Roughriders got a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 5th but Bryan struck out the side to end the inning.
    Porchas hit a solo home run in the 7th inning with one out and finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ware also finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and Sikes was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Yavapai College 8: The Aztecs took the lead for good in the 8th inning. Sophomore Fabian Ferreira (Tucson HS) hit a leadoff single and freshman JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) drove him in with an RBI single to give Pima an 8-7 advantage. Sikes followed with an RBI single to score freshman Cole Cummings.
    Ware drew a walk and later scored on an error in the 9th inning to give the Aztecs an insurance run.
    Down 6-3 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs tied it up by putting up a three spot. Ferreira hit an RBI single to score Porchas, who led off the inning with a double. Rollon hit into a double play but freshman Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) scored. Sikes tied the game with an RBI single to plate sophomore Garett Lake to make it 6-6.
    The Aztecs took a 7-6 lead in the 6th inning. Cummings hit a one-out single, stole second base and reach third on an error. Rollon drove him in with an RBI single.
    Sikes was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Ferreira went 3 for 5 with two RBIs while Porchas finished 3 for 5 with two runs. Cummings was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and three walks. Rollon went 1 for 5 with two RBIs.
    Freshman Angel Castillo (Sunnyside HS) picked up the win in relief (1-0) as he pitched one inning giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Sikes got the save after pitching the 9th inning giving up one hit with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host Eastern Arizona College in an ACCAC Division I doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
