Bachelier's walk-off in the 10th gives Aztecs baseball win in 2020 opener

The Pima Community College baseball team (1-0) opened the 2020 season on Friday in a dramatic way.

  • Freshman Marcel Bachelier (Nogales HS) hit a walk-off RBI single to left field with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to give the Aztecs a 7-6 win over Paradise Valley Community College.
  • Bachelier put the Aztecs ahead 2-0 with an RBI single in the 1st inning and had another RBI hit in the 5th inning to make it 5-0.
  • In the bottom of the 10th inning, freshman Andres Mendoza (Desert View HS) hit a leadoff infield single and was sacrificed to second base by sophomore Alex Bustamante (Canyon del Oro HS). Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) drew a walk and freshman Alex Kelch (Tucson HS) hit an infield single to load the bases.
  • Kelch got things going for the Aztecs in the 1st inning with an RBI single to score Bustamante. The Aztecs put up another two runs in the 2nd inning as sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) scored on an error and Durazo hit an RBI single to make it 4-0.
  • The Pumas rallied with two runs in the each the 6th and 7th innings to cut Pima's lead to 5-4. The Aztecs tacked on a run in the 7th when Ochoa drew a bases loaded walk with two out. The Pumas rallied again with one run in each the 8th and 9th innings to tie it at 6-6 and force extra innings.
  • Bachelier finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Kelch went 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored. Durazo was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and two walks. Ochoa finished went 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and three walks. Bustamante was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
  • Bustamante picked up the win (1-0) as he pitched the 10th inning giving up one hit with one strikeout. Freshman Ian Mejia (Sahuarita HS) started the game and threw four scoreless innings giving up two hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College. First game starts at 11:00 a.m.
