Aztecs Football Suffer First Loss at Mesa Community College
The rally fell short for the Pima Community College football team (4-1) who suffered its first loss of the 2015 season.
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs surrendered 20 points in the first quarter and couldn't overtake the lead in their 41-27 loss at Mesa Community College on Saturday.
Down 27-3 in the second quarter, the Aztecs scored 17 unanswered points to go into the locker room down 27-20. Freshman Sirgeo Hoffman (pictured) scored on a 14-yard touchdown run to make it 27-10. The Aztecs took advantage of two Mesa fumbles to cut into their lead. Sophomore Deontay Townsend (Mountain Pointe HS) scored on a 1-yard run to make it 27-17 and Nathan Farmer (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit a 37-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the half. Freshman Brandon Yamamoto (Basha HS) and sophomore Lopeti Fonokalafi had the fumble recoveries to set up the scores.
On Pima's first possession of the third quarter, freshman quarterback Antonio Hinojosa (Mountain Pointe HS) threw an interception that was returned 85 yards for the Mesa score to make it 34-20. Near the end of the third quarter, the Aztecs cut Mesa's lead back to one score as Townsend scored his second rushing touchdown from 7-yards out to make it 34-27 with 1:28 left in the quarter. Mesa scored on their next possession early in the fourth quarter. The Aztecs had a turnover on downs and two turnovers on their fourth quarter possessions.
Townsend finished with 135 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. Sophomore Tristen Foley had five catches for 67 yards. Farmer went 3 for 3 in extra points and 2 for 3 in field goals. Sophomore Wesley Payne (Mountain Pointe HS) had 13 total tackles and feloow sophomore Olen Brown (Sahuarita HS) had 10.
The Aztecs will have a bye next week and will be back at the Kino North Stadium on Saturday, Oct. against Arizona Western College at 7:00 p.m.
