Aztecs Football Hold Off Rally to Beat Arizona Western, Advance to WSFL Finals
The Pima Community College football team (7-3) avenged its regular season loss against Arizona Western College on Saturday as the Aztecs advanced to the WSFL Conference Championship on Saturday in Yuma.
The No. 3 seeded Aztecs scored the first 17 points of the game and held off a fourth quarter rally to win 17-13 against the No. 2 seeded Matadors. They advance to play No. 1 Snow College next Saturday in Ephraim, UT where they lost 48-27 just last week.
Nathan Farmer (Ironwood Ridge HS) put the Aztecs on the scoreboard with a field goal in the second quarter. Pima's defense also provided a big play when sophomore Wesley Payne (Mountain Pointe HS) scored on a 45-yard fumble return to put the Aztecs up 10-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, sophomore Donovan Moore (Tucson Magnet HS) took it in from 1-yard out for the score and put Pima up 17-0.
Up 17-7, Arizona Western was gaining momentum on a drive when a pass was picked off by freshman Timmy Hernandez (Mountain Pointe HS) late in the fourth quarter. Arizona Western scored on a hail mary pass as time expired.
The Aztecs will play No. 1 Snow College next Saturday in Ephraim, UT. Time of the game is TBD.
