Carrasco notches 28 points as Aztecs men's basketball tops Arizona Western

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (17-2, 9-2 in ACCAC) had to fend off a late rally from Arizona Western College (12-7, 7-4) but the Aztecs got it done in the end.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs beat the Matadors 112-102 as they were up by as much as 21 points with under eight minutes to go in the game. Arizona Western closed the gap to single digits at 108-100 with under a minute left but sophomore Ilunga Moise (Raymond S. Kellis HS) and freshman Abram Carrasco (Cholla HS) each knocked down a pair of free throws to seal it.

The Aztecs trailed as much as three points at 34-31 but Pima put together an 11-0 run to go up 42-34. The Aztecs led 47-38 at halftime.

Carrasco finished with a game-high 28 points on 8 for 13 shooting and 5 for 8 from three-point range. He also had nine assists and five rebounds. Moise had another strong game as he finished with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. He went 8 for 10 from the floor and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Keven Biggs (Cienega HS) scored 23 points on 8 for 14 shooting and 5 for 7 from three-point range. He also had six rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Isaiah Murphy (Cienega HS) contributed with 16 points while sophomore Alize Travis had eight points and nine assists.

The Aztecs begin the second half of the season on Wednesday when they host Tohono O'odham Community College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
