Banegas, Canez Lead Aztec Men's Soccer in Wild Offensive Game vs. Glendale

The Pima Community College men's soccer team (7-1, 7-1 in ACCAC) found itself in an offensive struggle on Tuesday against Glendale Community College (2-4-1, 2-4-1).

The Aztecs got passed the Gauchos 5-4 at Kino North Grandstand as the teams traded second half goals.

The Aztecs took a 3-1 lead early in the second half when freshman Gavino Carranza (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored off a throw-in from sophomore Kyle VanAlstine (Cienega HS) in the 50th minute. The Gauchos responded 30 seconds later to cut Pima's lead to 3-2.

Sophomore Carlo Valadez-Paz (Westview HS) scored a header off a rebounded ball in the 54th minute but the Gauchos came back with goals in the 63rd and 64th minutes to tie it at 4-4. The Aztecs took the lead for good 25 seconds later when sophomore Rogelio Canez (Nogales HS) scored on a header with an assist from Carranza.

Sophomore Hector Banegas (Rincon HS) scored two first half goals for the Aztecs. Down 1-0, Banegas found the back of the net with an assist from VanAlstine in the 25th minute. He scored one minute later in the 26th minute on a shot that was assisted by freshman Chris Cooper (Rincon/University HS). The Aztecs led 2-1 at the break.

The Aztecs outshot the Gauchos 11-7 and sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Anderson (Salpointe Catholic HS) had three saves.

The Aztecs are off until Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they play at Mesa Community College at 4:30 p.m.
