Singh Kaila wins two matches in first day of the NJCAA Tournament

Sophomore Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) advanced to the round of 16 in singles and doubles after the first day at the NJCAA National Championship. He beat Will Irvin in singles 7-5, 6-2. Along with No. 3 doubles partner Jesus Lopez, they won 6-0, 6-2.

     The Pima Community College men's tennis team kicked off play in the NJCAA National Championship on Monday at the Collin County Tennis Facilities in Plano, TX.

Sophomore Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) won his two matches on the day in singles and doubles. He defeated Will Irvin from Meridian Community College (MS) at No. 6 singles 7-5, 6-2. Along with No. 3 doubles partner Jesus Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS), the duo dominated to beat Jason Gomez and Zach Wisniewski from the College of Lake County (IL) 6-0, 6-2.

Sophomore Marc Avalos (Sunnyside HS) dropped his first round match at No. 1 singles to Jules Peletan from ASA College-Miami 6-0, 6-1. Fellow sophomore Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) lost at No. 2 singles to Gueninle Ouattara from Seminole State College (OK) 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) fell at No. 4 singles to Oscar Ferrero from Jacksonville College (TX) 6-1, 6-2. Sotelo and No. 2 doubles partner Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) fell to Marcel Agbegne and Gabriel Atteh from the New Mexico Military Institute 6-1, 6-0.

Lopez (No. 5 singles) and Reisig (No. 3 singles) received byes to the round of 16 in singles play. Lopez will play Noah James from Meridian CC. Reisig will play Donny Camp from Wallace State Community College (AL).

Singh Kaila will face off against No. 1 seeded Eric Ahren Moonga from ASA College-Miami at No. 6 singles

The No. 1 doubles team of Avalos and Ton will play Sebastian Osorio and Juan Pinilla from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (MS) in the round of 16. Lopez and Singh Kaila face No. 5 seeded Christian Borrero and Lucas Freitas from Cowley Community College (KS) at No. 3 doubles.

Avalos and Ton in singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Reisig and Sotelo await their opponents on the consolation bracket.
