Aztecs men's tennis falls short against No. 24 Glendale CC

The Pima Community College men's tennis team (1-3) played a tightly contested match on Thursday at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

It came down to the final singles match but the Aztecs fell to No. 24 ranked Glendale Community College 5-4. The Aztecs won two of the three doubles match but dropped four of six in singles play.

Freshman Beau Boyer (Cibola HS) won the first set but dropped the final two in his loss to Noah Mendoza at No. 6 singles. The match clinched the win for the Gauchos.

Freshman Scott Mantelman battled back in his No. 3 singles match and forced a tie-breaker after his second set win. He dropped the third set to Charlie Zwolsman 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.

Sophomore Tomothy Ou won his match at No. 1 singles over Abdella Mohammed while freshman Chris McDaniels (Tanque Verde HS) won his No. 4 singles match over Jared McMurdie 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Sophomore Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) fell at No. 2 singles to Hayate Sakaguchi 6-3, 6-3 while freshman Johnathan Wu lost at No. 5 singles to Bruno Deschamps 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles play, McDaniels and Boyer earned a hard-fought win at No. 3 doubles beating McMurdie and Mendoza 9-7. Ou and Mantelman beat Mohammed and Deschamps at No. 1 doubles 8-3.

Sotelo and Wu fell at No. 2 doubles to Sakaguchi and Zwolsman 8-1.

The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Tuesday at Paradise Valley Community College. The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
