Trejo provides spark as Aztecs softball sweeps Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (8-3, 5-1 in ACCAC) won two games on the road on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference match-up at Mesa Community College (5-3, 3-3).

Sophomore Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) provided some offense power for the Aztecs as she finished 4 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Bailey Critchlow also had a great day at the plate as she went 4 for 8 with six runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Margairta Corona (Tucson HS) 5 for 5 with four RBIs and three walks.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 5: The bats came alive in the mid-innings as the Aztecs scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth inning. Freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit an RBI double in the fifth inning and Trejo hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Trejo finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Smith also went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Critchlow was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and Corona went 1 for 1 with three walks.

Critchlow picked up the win (5-1) after she pitched a complete game giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 5 (5 innings, called due to darkness): Up 5-4, the Aztecs padded their lead with seven runs in the fifth inning. Corona and Trejo each hit two-run RBI doubles while Critchlow and MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) contributed with RBI singles in the inning.

Corona hit a two-run home run in the second inning as the Aztecs scored four runs to take a 5-1 lead.

Corona went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored while Critchlow finished 1 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. Trejo was also 1 for 3 with an two RBIs. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) finished 1 for 4 with two runs scored and Julian went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Hannah Freer (Sabino HS) picked up the win (1-1) in a relief appearance. She pitched three innings giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) started the game and went two innings giving up four runs (four earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and five walks.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus on Saturday when they host Yavapai College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
