Aztecs softball gets trounced against Yavapai College

The Pima Community College softball team (8-5, 5-3 in ACCAC) had a rough day at the West Campus on Saturday against Yavapai College (11-2, 7-1).

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs dropped two lopsided games to the No. 4 ranked Roughriders. The Aztecs surrendered 27 runs on the day.

Game 1: (4) Yavapai College Roughriders 12, (18) Pima CC Aztecs 4: The Roughriders put the Aztecs in a hole early and scored two runs in five of the seven innings.

Freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) in the second inning. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) hit a solo home run in the third inning. Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) hit an RBI single to plate sophomore Bailey Critchlow in the fifth.

Brown finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Critchlow went 1 for 4 with a run scored. Corona, Flores and Smith each went 1 for 3.

Critchlow took the loss (5-2) after she pitched two innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Game 2: (4) Yavapai College Roughriders 15, (18) Pima CC Aztecs 2 (5 innings): The Roughriders scored five runs in the first inning and capped it off with six runs in the fifth to close it out.

Crichlow hit an RBI triple to score freshman Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) in the third inning. In the fifth, Brown hit a triple and scored on another RBI hit by Critchlow, who finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Brown was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Arviso was 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) took the loss (1-2) as she pitched two-thirds of an inning giving up five runs (five earned) on no hits with five walks.

The Aztecs look to bounce back as they host three doubleheaders at the West Campus next week. They'll host GateWay Community College on Tuesday with games at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
