Flores has great day at the plate as Aztecs softball earn split vs. Colorado Northwestern CC

The Pima Community College softball team (10-7) earned a split in a non-conference doubleheader against Colorado Northwestern Community College (1-7) on Thursday at the West Campus.

Freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished the day 5 for 7 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 1: Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 13, Pima CC Aztecs 10: It was an offensive barrage in the first game but the Aztecs fell short in the end. Trailing 8-5, the Aztecs scored five runs in the fourth inning. Flores drew a bases loaded walk that was followed by sophomore Larissa Rodriguez's (Tucson HS) sacrifice-fly RBI to make it 8-7. Freshman MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) and freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) gave Pima the lead with a two-run RBI double to plate Flores and Julian and make it 10-8.

The Spartans scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Sophomore Bailey Critchlow hit a two-run RBI triple in the second inning to put Pima ahead 4-3. She finished the game 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Smith was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Flores went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) took the loss (1-3) after she pitched two innings in relief giving up eight runs (three earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and seven walks.

Game 2: (18) Pima CC Aztecs 6, Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 3: The Aztecs took the lead early and Critchlow shut out the Spartans for five innings.

Sophomore Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) had a two-run RBI hit to score sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) and Flores in the first inning. Sophomore Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson HS) hit an RBI double in the third inning to put Pima up 3-0.

In the fourth inning, Corona had a sacrifice-fly RBI and Flores hit an RBI single to make it a 5-0 lead. Julian brought in a run with a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning.

The Spartans scored a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning.

Pacheco finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Flores went 4 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Corona was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Rodriguez went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Julian was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Critchlow picked up the win (6-3) as she pitched a complete-game giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Central Arizona College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
