Trejo and Gorosave homer but Aztecs softball are swept at Phoenix College

The Pima Community College softball team (14-10, 10-7 in ACCAC) played an ACCAC doubleheader on the road at Phoenix College (16-4, 14-4) on Saturday.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs (Division I) fell to the No. 2 ranked Bears (Division II). Sophomores Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) and Gabriella Gorosave each hit solo home runs. It was the first meeting between the two teams since the Bears eliminated the Aztecs from the Region I, Division II tournament last season. The Aztecs moved to Division I this season.

Game 1: (2) Phoenix College Bears 10, (18) Pima CC Aztecs 4: The Aztecs fell behind 4-0 but cut into the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. The Bears pulled away with a one in the fifth inning, four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh inning.

Trejo hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put Pima on the board. She also hit an RBI single in the fifth inning as she finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) knocked in two runs as she reached on an error.

Sophomore Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) finished 2 for 4 with a run scored while sophomore Bailey Critchlow also went 2 for 4. Sophomore Mari Ruiz (Cholla HS) was 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Critchlow took the loss on the mound (8-4) as she pitched four and two-third innings giving up nine runs (nine earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: (2) Phoenix College Bears 12, (18) Pima CC Aztecs 1 (5 innings): The Bears pulled away early with five runs in the first inning. They added four runs in the second and three in the fourth inning.

Gorosave hit a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning and finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) finished 2 for 3.

Sophomore Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) took the loss (3-3) as she started the game and pitched two-thirds of the inning giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will take part in the Tucson Invitational held at Lincoln Park (4325 S. Pantano Rd.) on Tuesday. They'll play a non-conference doubleheader against Ancilla College at 3:30 and 6:00 p.m.
