Corona, Critchlow and Lorenson lead charge as Aztecs softball dominate South Mountain

The Pima Community College softball team (19-12, 13-9 in ACCAC) clicked on all cylinders on Tuesday in its ACCAC conference doubleheader at South Mountain Community College (8-20, 6-18).

The Aztecs earned a sweep in Phoenix as sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) hit two home runs and finished 5 for 7 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Pitchers Bailey Critchlow and Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) shut down the Cougar hitters as Lorenson produced a no hitter in five innings.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 6, South Mountain CC Cougars 1: Critchlow stifled the Cougar hitters as she pitched a complete-game giving up one run (none earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. She earned the win and improved to 9-5 on the year.

The Aztecs' offense got on the board in the first inning when freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a two-run RBI single.

Corona hit a solo home run in the third inning while Critchlow contributed with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Sophomore Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) hit an RBI single of her own in the seventh.

Flores finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Corona went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Critchlow was also 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Pacheco went 1 for 1 with an RBI.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, South Mountain CC Cougars 0 (5 innings): Lorenson stymied the Cougars as she pitched all five innings giving up no hits with three strikeouts and four walks. She picked up the win and improved to 4-3 on the season.

The offense scored three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Gabriella Gorosave hit an RBI single in the inning.

Corona hit her second solo home run of the day in the third inning and also hit a two-run RBI double in the fourth. She finished the game 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Gorosave went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshmen Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) and Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) each scored a run.

The Aztecs will play a make-up conference doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Thursday. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
