Gorosave hits two homers, Lorenson throws fourth no-hitter as softball sweeps Scottsdale

The Pima Community College softball team (32-17, 26-14 in ACCAC) got contributions on both sides of the diamond on Tuesday as it earned an ACCAC conference sweep at Scottsdale Community College (18-28, 13-27).

The Aztecs, playing in their fifth straight road doubleheader, got a boost from sophomore Gabriella Gorosave and freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS). Gorosave went 6 for 8 with two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored. Lorenson threw her fourth no-hitter of the season while picking up two wins with 15 strikeouts.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 0 (6 innings): Lorenson pitched all six innings giving up no hits with five strikeouts and four walks. She picked up the win and improved to 11-5.

The Aztecs scored four runs in the first inning and six in the sixth inning for the mercy-rule victory. Sophomore Mari Ruiz (Cholla HS) and Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) hit RBI doubles while freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) drove in a run in the first inning.

Gorosave launched a three-run home run in the sixth inning while Corona drew a bases loaded walk. Gorosave went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a double. Corona was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Flores was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Ruiz finished 1 for 3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a double.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 6, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 3 (8 innings): It took extra innings but the Aztecs put up three runs in the eighth inning and Lorenson closed it out.

Ruiz scored on a throwing error and Gorosave capped off the inning with two-run home run to plate Flores.

Down 3-1 after the Artichokes scored two runs in the second inning, sophomore Gabriela Trejo helped close the gap with an RBI single in the third inning. Corona tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning with an RBI single that scored sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS).

Gorosave finished with another 3 for 4 performance at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Corona also finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Trejo was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Lorenson pitched in relief and picked up the win (12-5) as she threw six innings giving up three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) started the game and pitched two innings giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus field on Saturday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College at noon and 2:00 p.m.
