Aztecs softball finish 4-1 at CSN Kickoff Classic

The Pima Community College softball team (4-1) closed out the College of Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic on Saturday with two statement victories.

The Aztecs scored 15 runs on the day as sophomore MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) came through in a clutch situation while freshman pitcher Paige Adair earned two more victories and finished with 45 strikeouts in her four starts.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, (2) Salt Lake Community College Bruins 7: MaryAlys Julian hit a walk-off RBI double in the seventh inning to seal Pima's win over No. 2 Salt Lake.

The Aztecs led 7-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning but the Bruins capitalized on four Pima errors to score five runs and tie it at 7-7.

Sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) hit a two-run RBI double as part of Pima's four-run 1st inning. She also hit an RBI single in the fourth and finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Julian was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Alese Casper went 1 for 2 with a run scored and three walks.

Adair picked up the win (3-0) pitching a complete game while giving up seven runs (two earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 2: Freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) hit a two-run RBI double as part of Pima's three-run 3rd inning. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single as part of their two-run 4th inning to make it 6-1.

Cabral went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles while Flores was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Julian finished 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two walks and Casper finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and two walks.

Adair threw another complete-game and improved to 4-0 on the mound as she gave up two runs (two earned) on five hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will play in their home opener at the West Campus Softball Field on Tuesday as they host Arizona Western College in an ACCAC conference showdown. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
