Adair throws shutout, Gentry homers as Aztecs softball splits with Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (5-2, 1-1 in ACCAC) got its first taste of ACCAC conference play on Tuesday as the Aztecs hosted Arizona Western College.

The Aztecs earned a shutout victory in the first game but the Matadors rallied in the second game to split the doubleheader.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 6, Arizona Western College Matadors 0: Freshman Paige Adair pitched another gem as she threw a complete-game shutout giving up three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Sophomore Sierra Gentry put the Aztecs on the board with a three-run bomb in the second inning. The Aztecs scored two more runs in the fourth inning when freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) hit an RBI double and Adair had an RBI single.

Cabral hit another RBI single in the fifth inning as she finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gentry was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 11, Pima CC Aztecs 8 (9 innings): The Matadors broke open a tie ballgame with three runs in the ninth inning. The Aztecs had the bases loaded when sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a ball to center field but was snagged off a diving catch to end the game.

The Aztecs scored two runs in each of the first three innings. Gentry hit an RBI single in the fourth to give Pima a 7-3 lead. The Matadors rallied in the later innings.

Freshman Alyse Casper finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and two walks. Sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) hit a two-run RBI double in the first inning and finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs. Gentry was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Casper took the loss (0-2) in a relief appearance as she went two and two-third innings giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits with one walk.

The Aztecs will play in the Great Western Shoot-Out in Yuma on Thursday. They'll play three games; the College of Southern Idaho at 1:00 p.m., the College of Southern Nevada at 3:30 p.m. and Luna Community College at 6:00 p.m.
