Aztecs softball goes undefeated at Great Western Shootout

The Pima Community College softball team (8-2) earned three wins in Yuma on Thursday in the Great Western Shootout hosted by Arizona Western College.

The Aztecs outscored their opponents 18-2 for the day. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 6 for 11 at the plate while freshman Paige Adair continued her undefeated streak on the mound. She leads the NJCAA with 70 strikeouts. Alese Casper showcased on both sides of the diamond.

Pima CC Aztecs 11, College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles 1 (6 innings): The Aztecs busted the game wide open with seven runs in the top of the 6th inning to earn the mercy-rule win.

Flores hit two-run RBI singles in both the 3rd and the 6th innings and finished the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Sophomore Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) was a flawless 4 for 4 with two runs scored. Sophomore Alyse Talamante finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) hit a two-run RBI double as part of the barrage in the 6th inning as she went 1 for 4 with two RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Paige Adair picked up the win (6-0) as she threw all six innings giving up one run (one earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Pima CC Aztecs 5, College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 1: Casper picked up her first win on the mound (1-2) as she threw a complete-game gem giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts.

Freshman Maria Vanezza-Caldera (Tucson HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the 6th to give the Aztecs a cushion as she finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs while sophomore MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit an RBI double in the 5th inning and was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Arviso had an RBI single in the 4th inning and went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Flores was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Pima CC Aztecs 2, Luna CC Rough Riders 0: Casper hit a two-run RBI double to score sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) and freshman Sarrah Jones in the 2nd inning. Casper finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Flores went 2 for 3 while Prieto was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Jones finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Adair continued her undefeated streak on the mound (7-0) as she threw her second complete-game shutout of the season. She gave up three hits with 10 strikeouts.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Softball Field on Tuesday as they host Mesa Community College. The first game will start at 1:00 p.m.
