Aztecs softball bewilders GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (11-5, 4-4 in ACCAC) earned two mercy-rule victories against GateWay Community College (0-8, 0-8) on Tuesday earning its first ACCAC conference sweep of the season.

The Aztecs were led by freshman Paige Adair, who threw a combined 10 innings giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with 18 strikeouts. Sophomore Sierra Gentry had a great day at the plate as she went 4 for 6 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs took control with six runs in the 5th inning. Freshman Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS), freshman Alese Casper and sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) provided three straight RBI hits in the inning.

Freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) and Gentry went back-to-back in the 3rd inning with RBI doubles and again with RBI singles in the 5th inning.

Cabral and Gentry both finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Prieto went 1 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Gomez was 1 for 2 with two runs, an RBI and one walk.

Adair (9-1) picked up the win as she threw all five innings giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with 10 strikeouts on 58 pitches.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs posted another barrage with five runs in the 5th inning. Gentry hit a two-run RBI double and later scored on an error in the inning. She went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run scored and two walks.

Prieto had RBI hits in the 4th and 5th innings as she finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Alyse Talamante had bases loaded walks in the 1st and 4th innings as she finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.

The Aztecs drew 12 walks for the game as four players had two each.

Adair earned her 10th win of the season (10-1) as she pitched all five innings giving up one hit with eight strikeouts on 68 pitches.

The Aztecs will continue their road trip as they play at Central Arizona College in an ACCAC Division I match-up on Saturday in Coolidge. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
