Prieto hits grand slam as softball rallies to earn sweep at Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (19-7, 12-6 in ACCAC) earned a comeback victory to secure the sweep on Thursday at Glendale Community College (7-20, 5-15).

The Aztecs have won 10 of their last 12 games as they got big production on offense from freshman Alese Casper, who went 6 for 10 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) cleared the bases with one swing in the second game and finished the day with five RBIs.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Glendale CC Gauchos 1: The Aztecs gave themselves a cushion with three runs in the 6th inning. Sophomore Chandler Arviso (Cinola HS), Casper and Prieto all had RBI hits in the inning.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 3rd inning when freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) hit an RBI single to score Casper. Cabral hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning after a leadoff walk by sophomore Sierra Gentry to put the Aztecs up 4-0.

Casper hit an RBI single in the 4th inning to score freshman Paige Adair. Casper finished the game 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cabral went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Arviso was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Adair picked up her 16th win of the season (16-2) as she pitched a complete game giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with 12 strikeouts.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Glendale CC Gauchos 6: The Aztecs rallied from a 6-0 deficit to steal the second game. Pima scored six runs in the 6th inning and three in the 7th inning.

The Gauchos scored three runs in each the 2nd and 3rd innings off Casper but had just two hits for the rest of the game.

Down 6-1 in the 6th inning, the Aztecs loaded the bases with two outs. Arviso hit an RBI single to score freshman Sarrah Jones which was followed by Casper's RBI single to plate sophomore Alyssa Smith to make it 6-3. Prieto slugged the first pitch she saw and drove it out for the grand slam to put Pima up 7-6.

The Aztecs tacked on a few more runs in the 7th as sophomore MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) hit a two-run RBI single to score Cabral and Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS). Arviso hit another RBI single to score Smith.

Prieto went 2 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Casper finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Julian was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Arviso went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jones was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Gentry picked up her first win on the mound (1-0) as she pitched three and two-third innings in a relief appearance. She gave up three hits with one walk. Adair pitched the 7th inning and had two strikeouts. She was second in the nation in strikeouts coming into today's games. She now has 153 on the season.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday when they play at Paradise Valley Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game starts at noon.
