Aztecs softball's offense clocks Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (29-11, 20-10 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC doubleheader road sweep on Saturday at Mesa Community College (18-16, 14-16).

The Aztecs scored 26 runs as multiple players put their stamp on this one. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished the day 5 for 10 with two homers, eight RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) went 4 for 8 with five RBIs and two runs while Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) was also 4 for 8 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Alese Casper finished 4 for 9 with six runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 8 (9 innings): The Aztecs rallied to tie the game in the 7th inning and scored seven runs in the 9th to help put away the Thunderbirds.

Flores tied the game at 4-4 in the 7th with an RBI single to score freshman Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS).

Flores hit a three-run home run in the 9th inning to make it 8-4. Sophomore Sierra Gentry hit an RBI single and Caldera smashed a two-run homer. The Thunderbirds scored four runs in the bottom of the 9th.

Flores finished the game 2 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Caldera also went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Cabral hit a three-run homer in the 1st inning and finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Casper was 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

Freshman Paige Adair picked up the win (17-4) after she pitched all nine innings giving up eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 6 (6 innings):The Aztecs scored five runs in each the 3rd and 4th innings.

Flores had another game-tying hit as she drove in sophomore Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) to make it 2-2. Cabral followed with an RBI double and Caldera cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double to make it 6-2.

Up 6-4 in the 4th, the Aztecs' offense came through again. Flores and Gentry hit RBI singles and freshman Sarrah Jones capped off the inning with a two-run RBI single to make it 11-4.

Flores hit her second home run of the day with a solo shot in the 5th inning. She finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Casper went 2 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored.

Caldera was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Cabral finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jones had two RBIs and Arviso scored two runs in the game.

Gentry picked up the win (5-1) as she started the game and threw three and one-third innings giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Softball Field on Tuesday when they host Yavapai College. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m.
