Prieto has 6 RBIs as Aztecs softball snatches doubleheader from GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (31-13, 22-12 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC doubleheader sweep at the West Campus Softball Field on Saturday over GateWay Community College (4-28, 4-28).

Sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) finished the day 3 for 8 with six RBIs. Freshman Alese Casper earned two wins on the mound and scored five runs. Freshman Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) was 5 for 6 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) was 5 for 7 with three RBIs and four runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 2: The Aztecs took an early advantage and scored three insurance runs in the 6th inning to down the Geckos.

Cabral got things going with a two-run RBI double to score Casper and sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) in the 1st inning. Cabral scored on an error later in the inning.

Prieto hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning to make it 4-1. Sophomore Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning and had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 6th.

Cabral finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Casper went 2 for 4 with an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the 6th. She also scored two runs. Smith was 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Caldera finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Prieto went 1 for 5 with an RBI and sophomore Sierra Gentry went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Casper picked up the win (8-6) as she pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (none earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 16, GateWay CC Geckos 3 (5 innings): The Aztecs went on a tear with eight runs in the 1st and seven runs in the 2nd to break away and earn the mercy-rule victory.

Caldera hit a two-run RBI double and later, Prieto came through with a two-run RBI triple in the 1st inning. Prieto cleared the bases in the 2nd inning with a three-run RBI triple to score freshmen Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS), Mackenzie Judge (Ironwood Ridge HS) and Casper to make it 13-0. Corday hit a two-run RBI double earlier in the inning.

Prieto finished the game 2 for 3 with five RBIs, a run scored and two triples. Caldera went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Cabral also finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Durazo-Corday was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Flores was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Casper went 1 for 2 with three runs scored.

Casper picked up her second win of the day (9-6) as she threw three innings giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Softball Field on Tuesday when they host Central Arizona College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
