Durazo-Corday's bat sparks offense as Aztecs softball splits with Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (15-14, 11-11 in ACCAC) rallied in a big way to earn a split at Mesa Community College (13-13, 9-13) on Tuesday in an ACCAC road doubleheader.

  • Game 1: Mesa CC Thunderbirds 3, Pima CC Aztecs 1: The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning as the Aztecs managed three hits for the game.
    Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) put the Aztecs on the board with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning.
    Caldera finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Alese Casper went 1 for 2 while freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) was 1 for 3.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (4-4) as she pitched six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs responded with a run rule victory.
    Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) put the Aztecs on the scoreboard with a two-run RBI double to score sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) and Caldera. The Aztecs loaded the bases in the 2nd inning. Casper was hit by a pitch while Marshall and Durazo-Corday each hit sacrifice-fly RBIs. Sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) capped off the inning with an RBI single to score Casper to make it 6-0.
    Durazo-Corday went 1 for 3 with three RBIs and Marshall finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Giselle Munoz was 1 for 1 with an RBI and two runs scored and two walks.
    Pitchers Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) and Casper combined to throw a five-inning shutout. Castillo picked up the win (5-6) as she threw two innings giving up one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Casper pitched the final three innings in relief giving up one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will play a make-up ACCAC doubleheader on Thursday when they play at South Mountain Community College. It was rescheduled from Mar. 12. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
