Marshall and Caldera homer as Aztecs softball splits with No. 11 Yavapai College

The Pima Community College softball team (27-26, 23-23 in ACCAC) snagged the first game on Tuesday as the Aztecs split with No. 11 Yavapai College (45-11, 36-10) in Prescott.
Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) finished the day 4 for 6 at the plate and did her damage in the first game.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 6, (11) Yavapai College Roughriders 5: Marshall went yard in the 6th inning as freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) held off rallies in the 6th and 7th innings.
    Tied at 5-5 in the top of the 6th inning, Marshall hit a solo home run to centerfield on a 1-2 count to give the Aztecs the lead for good.
    Castillo got a strikeout to end the 6th with Yavapai runners on first and third base. In the 7th inning, she got a flyout to end the game with a runner on first base.
    Marshall and freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit RBI singles in the 1st inning. Sophomore Alese Casper and Marshall went back-to-back with RBI singles in the 2nd inning to put the Aztecs up 4-0.
    Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit a leadoff solo homer in the 5th inning to put the Aztecs up 5-3.
    Marshall finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Caldera went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Munoz was 2 for 3 with an RBI while sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Casper finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
    Castillo came in for relief and got the win (11-11). She pitched five and two-third innings giving up two runs (none earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

  • (11) Yavapai College Roughriders 12, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (5 innings): The Roughriders took control with 10 runs in the 3rd inning as the Aztecs offense managed three hits for the game.
    Marshall finished the game 1 for 2 while Munoz and Lozania each went 1 for 1.
    Casper took the loss (9-5) as she started the game and threw two innings giving up four runs (four earned) on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Mesa Community College at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field. First pitch is at noon.
