Jumpers Jarus and Schiffmacher snag national titles at the NJCAA Championships

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams closed out their seasons on Saturday at the NJCAA Division I National Championships in Hutchinson, KS.

The men's team finished tied for 12th place with a team score of 27 points while the women's team tied for 16th with a score of 18.5 points.

Freshmen Seth Jarus (Wickenburg HS) and Megan Schiffmacher came away as national champions after Saturday's competition. Jarus won the men's long jump with a winning leap of 24-feet, 4.25-inches (7.42 meters). Schiffmacher won the women's high jump with a person-best jump of 5-feet, 8.25-inches. Both Jarus and Schiffmacher earned NJCAA first-team All-American honors.

In other women's events, sophomore Hannah Bartz (Mountain View HS) took third place in the long jump as she finished with a leap of 19-1 (5.81 meters) and earned NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors.

Freshman Rhiannon Bearup (Skyline HS) placed seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 05.25 seconds. Sophomore Melissa Cotsonas (Mountain View HS) was behind her in eighth place at 1:05.46.

In other men's events, sophomore Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) fell short in repeating as the national champion in the high jump. He took sixth place at 6-9.75 (2.08 meters).

Freshman Collin Dylla (Ironwood Ridge HS) placed sixth in the 800 meter race with a time of 1:55.82.

Freshman Cam Duffy (Peoria HS), who was fourth in the triple jump on Friday, took seventh place in the long jump with a mark of 23-9.50 (7.25 meters).

Freshman Tony Chavez (Bisbee HS) finished in eighth place in the men's pole vault with a vault of 14-1 (4.30 meters).

Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS) – 11th in long jump, 22-11.75 (7.00 meters); 19th in 200 meters (21.87)

Jymil Toney (Desert Vista HS) – 11th in high jump, 6-6 (1.98 meters)

Rhiannon Bearup (Skyline HS), Melissa Cotsonas (Mountain View HS), Tyra Yanez (Sahuaro HS), Amber McCroskey (Buena HS) – 12th in 4x400 relay (3:57.54)

Dahrian Harris-Mesh (Rincon HS) – 14th in discus, 136-4 (41.56 meters)

David Fernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) – 19th ion 5,000 meters (17:04.38)

Alex Palacios (Mountain View HS) – 23rd in 400 meter hurdles (57.23)

Amber McCroskey (Buena HS) – 25th in 100 meters (12.32)
