Aztecs 4x400 relay teams shine at Mesa Invitational

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams upped their national qualifying marks on Saturday at the Mesa Invitational.

The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Isaiah Martin (Empire HS), freshman Dariun Glover (Skyline HS), freshman Adrian Watson (Cienega HS) and freshman Robert Williams (South Moutain HS) set a new Pima record and national qualifying time after they took second place with a time of 3 minutes, 18.09 seconds.

Sophomore Victor Bustamante (Flowing Wells HS) set a national qualifier and personal record in the 1,000-meter race as he placed second with a time of 2:34.14.

Sophomore Gabe Atchley set his qualifier and a personal record in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:56.82.

Sophomore Collin Dylla (Ironwood Ridge HS) improved on two of his national qualifying times. He took second place in the 800-meter race and improved by two seconds with a time of 1:55.35. He also improved on his one-mile run qualifier as he took first place with a time of 4:24.89. His previous time was 4:25.13.

In other men's action, sophomore Ben Anderson (Flagstaff HS) took first place in the triple jump for the fourth straight meet. He won with a jump of 45-feet, 7-inches. Freshman Tyler Bauer took first in the 3,000-meter race at 9:00.23. Watson earned first in the 400-meter race with a time of 50.10.

The Aztecs women's team set three new qualifiers as the relay teams produced a great meet. The 4x400 relay team of freshman Annabella Spencer (Sahuaro HS), Jala Pinckney (Walden Grove HS), freshman Kaylen Fox (Sahuaro HS) and sophomore Tyra Yanez (Sahuaro HS) took first place with a time of 4:00.39.

The distance medley relay team of Spencer, freshman Cindy Corrales, sophomore Arianna Roche and freshman Katherine Bruno (Canyon del Oro HS) earned their qualifier with a time of 13:22.96.

Freshman Anahiramar Lopez (Tucson HS) placed second in the long jump and earned herself a qualifier with a mark of 17-feet, 10-inches. She also tied her national qualifier in the high jump as she took first place at 5-5.25.

The Aztecs set 16 national qualifying marks and will compete in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Mar. 2-3 in Lubbock, TX at Texas Tech University.
