Aztecs women's basketball dominate first half to befuddle Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (7-2, 4-0 in ACCAC) used the three-ball to take firm control in the first half on Wednesday at Eastern Arizona College (1-11, 1-3).

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated the Gila Monsters (Division I) 86-44. The Aztecs closed out the first quarter on a 14-2 run as sophomores Izzy Spruit (Mesquite HS) and Alliyah Bryant (Mesquite HS) as well as freshman Macey Rose hit three-pointers to spark the run and put the Aztecs ahead 23-9.

The Aztecs continued to pour it on as they scored the first 17 points in the second quarter. The Gila Monsters scored their first points of the quarter at the 1:07 mark and finished with four points in the quarter. The Aztecs led 46-13 at the break.

Bryant and fellow sophomore Christine Ortega (Flowing Wells HS) each scored 12 points to lead the Aztecs. Freshman Jacqulynn Nakai (Coconino HS) had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Spruit, Rose and sophomore Aubre Fortner each scored nine points.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Gymnasium on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College at 2:00 p.m.
