Spruit nets 16 points but Aztecs women's basketball fall to Cochise College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (12-3, 6-1 in ACCAC) had its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday against a tough Cochise College (13-2, 6-1).

The No. 4 ranked Aztecs started red-hot from three-point range but fizzled in their 81-66 loss to the Division I Apaches. This was Pima's first defeat in ACCAC conference play.

The Aztecs hit seven of their first 11 three-pointers and took a 24-15 lead after the first quarter. They led 41-36 at halftime.

The Apaches started the third quarter on a 16-6 run to put the Aztecs in a 52-47 deficit. Down 72-62, sophomore Izzy Spruit (Mesquite HS) converted on a four-point play but the Aztecs would be held scoreless for the final three minutes of the game. The Aztecs were outscored 45-25 in the second half.

Spruit finished the game with a team-high 16 points on 5 for 10 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore Alliyah Bryant (Mesquite HS) scored 15 points off the bench while freshman Shauna Bribiescas (Dobson HS) contributed with 11 points.

Freshman Jacqulynn Nakai (Coconino HS) scored nine points but was held scoreless in the second half.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Wednesday when they play at Phoenix College at 5:30 p.m.
