Aztecs women's basketball seize control of 3rd quarter to beat South Mountain; Holthaus gains 399th win

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (19-5, 13-3 in ACCAC) set the tone in the third quarter against South Mountain Community College (9-12, 6-10) on Wednesday in Phoenix.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs outscored the Cougars 29-9 in the quarter and went on to win 93-71. The Aztecs were in a tight game in the first half as they led 21-20 after the first quarter and 42-36 at the break.

Four Aztecs scored in double figures as freshman Jacqulynn Nakai (Coconino HS) led the way with 18 points. She went 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Sophomore Izzy Spruit (Mesquite HS) drained five 3-pointers as she finished with 17 points.

Sophomore Christine Ortega (Flowing Wells HS) and freshman Shauna Bribiescas (Dobson HS) each finished with 16 points while sophomore Aubre Fortner contributed with 11 points.

The Aztecs swept the regular season meetings with the Cougars. Pima won 102-59 in December at the West Campus.

The win gave coach Todd Holthaus his 399th head-coaching career victory. He will look for win No. 400 on Saturday when the Aztecs return to the West Campus Gymnasium to host Scottsdale Community College at 5:00 p.m.
