Aztecs women's basketball stymied in the first quarter, fall short at Cochise College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (20-6, 14-4 in ACCAC) fell behind by double digits in the first quarter and couldn't overtake Cochise College (24-2, 17-1) on Wednesday in Douglas.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs (Division II) fell to the No. 8 ranked Apaches (Division I) 92-82. The Aztecs were down by as much as 18 points in the first quarter and trailed 28-15 at the end of the quarter. They closed the deficit and outscored the Apaches 20-13 in the second quarter. Pima trailed 41-35 at halftime.

The Aztecs took a one-point lead halfway through the third quarter but the Apaches sealed the win in the final minutes.

Freshman Shauna Bribiescas (Dobson HS) scored a team-high 21 points. Sophomore Christine Ortega (Flowing Wells HS) finished with 20 points. Freshman Jacqulynn Nakai (Coconino HS) and sophomore Aubre Fortner each contributed with 12 points.

The Aztecs were swept in their regular season meetings with the Apaches. They fell 81-66 last month at the West Campus Gymnasium.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Gymnasium on Saturday to face Phoenix College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
