The Pima Community College women's soccer team (6-3-1) played a tough match-up against Arizona Western College (6-1-3) on Thursday at Kino North Stadium.
The Aztecs found early opportunities at the goal but fell to the No. 18 ranked Matadors 3-1.
Sophomore Alexis Hernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) had a breakaway shot but it was saved in the fourth minute. Later in the half, she had an open-net opportunity but couldn't capitalize.
The Matadors scored in the 17th minute as the Aztecs trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Down 2-0 after the Matadors scored in the 60th minute, the Aztecs cut the lead in half when sophomore Jahmonique Smith (Cienega HS) scored after fellow sophomore Emily Gallagher (Sahuaro HS) gave her a crisp pass that led to a breakaway goal in the 64th minute.
The Matadors made it a two-goal advantage again with a goal in the 79th minute.
The Aztecs were out-shot 13-9 for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Tara Kase (Buena HS) finished with 10 saves.
The Aztecs will start the second half of the season on Saturday when they play at Paradise Valley Community College at noon in Phoenix. The Aztecs fell 2-1 to the Pumas in the first game of the season.
