Angelina Amparano has 16 saves but Aztecs Women's Soccer falls in Region Final at Phoenix College in PKs

The Pima Community College women's soccer team (13-2-1) added another layer to its Division II rivalry with Phoenix College (14-2-1) on Saturday as the teams battled it out in the NJCAA Region I, Division II Finals on Saturday in Phoenix.

• The No. 2 Aztecs and the No. 1 Bears played 110 minutes to a stalemate, but the Bears claimed the region crown after winning the penalty kick session 3-1.
• The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the PK session after two rounds as freshman Meredith Scott (Walden Grove HS) and sophomore Mari Acosta (Sahuarita HS) had their shots blocked by Phoenix keeper Jennifer Alvillar.
• Aztecs sophomore goalkeeper Angelina Amparano (Salpointe Catholic HS) blocked the next two Phoenix College attempts and freshman Kyleigh Oliver (Salpointe Catholic HS) converted on her penalty kick in the third round to tie it at 1-1. The Bears scored on their next attempt but freshman Sydney Yebra (Tucson Magnet HS) had hers blocked and the Bears would score on their fifth attempt to seal it.
• Amparano finished the game with 16 saves.
• "It's disappointing losing in PKs after a hard fought match but it was a great battle between two good teams," Pima women's soccer coach Kendra Veliz said. "Phoenix had a few opportunities in overtime but our defense and GK (Amparano) held the shutout. Lina Amparano was terrific tonight."

The Aztecs have a good chance on being an at-large team for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament as they await the selection show on Monday, November 7.
