Mackey wins single match, Aztecs fall at Eastern Arizona

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (1-5, 0-1 in conference) dropped its first ACCAC conference match of the season on Wednesday at No. 9 ranked Eastern Arizona College.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs lost 7-2 as they won one match in singles and one in doubles competition. Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) and Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) defeated Cassidy McWhorter and Madison Fleming 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles match-up. Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) and Stephanie Nickles (Canyon del Oro HS) lost 8-5 in their No. 3 doubles match while Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) and No. 1 doubles partner Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) lost 8-3.

In singles competition, Mackey defeated McKenzie Sexton 6-3, 6-1 in her No. 6 singles match. Nickles won the first set in her No. 5 singles match but dropped the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 against Kylee Jones. Alameda and Hernandez each played tough singles matches as well. Alameda fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) against McWhorter in her No. 3 singles match and Hernandez lost 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) against Madison Fleming.

Karp lost to Paulina Chawafambira 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Oropeza fell against McKenna Nelson 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match.

The Aztecs will play at Mesa Community College on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
