PCC women's tennis sweep doubles, beat Mesa CC

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (2-5, 1-1 in ACCAC conference) played three tough matches in doubles competition and earned some hard fought victories in singles on Tuesday in Mesa.

The Aztecs defeated Mesa Community College 6-3 to earn their first conference win of the season.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs swept all three doubles matches to take the lead. Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) and No. 3 doubles partner Stephanie Nickels (Canyon del Oro HS) held on to beat Sheridan Skarda and Sydney Madsen 9-7. Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) and doubles partner Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) beat Michelle Fournier and Desiree Curiel 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match-up. Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) and No. 1 doubles partner Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) defeated Racheal Eshillonu and Vanessa Mitrica 8-5.

In singles competition, Mackey responded in the third-set tiebreaker to beat Madsen 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match. Nickels got by Mitrica in the first set and won the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-0. Oropeza earned the third singles win as she beat Fournier in the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-2.

Karp dropped a tough match at the No. 1 singles spot as she fell 6-1, 7-6 (4) to Eshillonu. Alameda lost to Skarda 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match while Hernandez fell to Curiel 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

The Aztecs will host a non-conference match at the West Campus on Thursday when they play Ohio Northern University at noon.
