Aztecs women's tennis' comeback falls short against Eastern Arizona

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (6-8, 3-2 in ACCAC) dropped all three doubles matches but came back to close the gap in singles competition against Eastern Arizona College.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs lost to No. 9 Eastern Arizona 5-4 on Tuesday at the Tucson Racquet Club. Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) won her sixth straight match at No. 6 singles as she defeated Breanna Bens 6-2, 6-1. Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) beat McKenna Nelson at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0 while Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) defeated Cassidy McWhorter 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) defeated Madison Fleming in the No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-2.

Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) took an early lead in the second set but fell in the end to Pauline Chawafambira 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) dropped her No. 5 singles match against Kylee Jones 6-2, 6-1.

The Aztecs played a pair of very close doubles matches as Alameda and Hernandez took an 8-7 lead against McWhorter and Fleming but lost 9-8. Nickles and Mackey kept their No. 3 doubles match close but could not overtake Jones and McKenzie Sexton as they fell 8-6. Karp and No. 1 doubles partner Oropeza lost to Chawafambira and Nelson 8-3.

The Aztecs will close out a busy week on Thursday against Mesa Community College at the Tucson Racquet Club. The match will start at 1:30 p.m.
