Aztecs Women's Tennis Shut Out Imperial Valley to Open Season

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (1-0) dominated singles and doubles competition in its first match of the 2016 season.

The Aztecs blanked Imperial Valley College (CA) 9-0 on Saturday at the West Campus tennis courts.

Freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) played at No. 2 singles and won her match 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) also shut out her opponent as she won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Dana Pineda (Rincon/University HS) won her match at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0 while fellow freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

Freshmen Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) and sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) won their matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively by default.

In doubles competition, Hernandez and Pineda earned a shutout win at 8-0 in their No. 3 doubles match. Miller and Nickles played at No. 2 doubles and won 8-1. Brown and Ruth won their No. 1 doubles match by default.

The Aztecs will have a tough match on Friday when they host New Mexico State University at the Tucson Racquet Club. The match starts at 1:00 p.m.
