Aztecs women's tennis is shut out at Mesa CC

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (3-4, 2-4 in ACCAC) played its second match in as many days as the Aztecs dropped an ACCAC conference match on Wednesday at Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs were shut out against the No. 11 ranked Thunderbirds 9-0.

In doubles competition, the No. 1 doubles team of freshmen Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) lost to Khanh Huynh and Naa Ankrah 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of freshmen Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) and Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS) fell to Hanna Nelson and Michelle Fourtnier 8-2. The Thunderbirds won the No. 2 doubles match by default.

Shafer played a tough second set at No. 5 singles but fell short against Nelson 6-0, 6-4. Oropeza dropped her No. 1 singles match to Huynh 6-1, 6-1 while Fernando lost 6-1, 6-0 to Ankrah at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Dana Pineda (Univeristy HS) play at No. 3 singles and lost to Yolanda Carlon 6-0, 6-0. Rodriguez fell to Fourtnier 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Mesa won the No. 6 singles match by default.

The Aztecs will play at Glendale Community College on Thursday, Apr. 6 at 1:30 p.m.
