Aztecs women's tennis close out regular season with win vs. Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (5-4, 4-4 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Tuesday at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

The Aztecs defeated Paradise Valley Community College 7-2.

Freshman Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) rallied from being down 1-4 in the second set to beat Cheyanna Anderson 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. Shafer, along with No. 3 doubles partner, freshman Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS), defeated Chanel Ruiz and Ali Ambriz 8-4.

Freshmen Lien Nguyen and Ashley Ochoa (Tucson HS) broke open a 4-4 tie with three straight points and hung on to beat Erica Wolford and Anderson 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Nguyen went on to earn a win at No. 3 singles over Bianca Amaya 6-0, 6-2.

Freshmen duo Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) won their No. 1 doubles match over Alexandra Levendi and Amaya 8-3. Oropeza dominated her No. 1 singles match to beat Levendi 6-1, 6-1 while Fernando earned a win at No. 2 singles against Ruiz 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomore Dana Pineda (University HS) dropped her match at No. 4 singles to Wolford 6-3, 6-1. Rodriguez won the first set but fell in the tie-breaker to Ambriz at No. 6 singles 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Region I Championship on Tuesday and Wednesday, Apr. 18-19 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, AZ. Competition begins at 8:00 a.m. on both days.
