Aztecs women's tennis powers past Mesa CC

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (5-1) got back on track on Thursday after suffering its first loss of the season earlier in the week.

The No. 17 ranked Aztecs defeated Mesa Community College 8-1. Pima lost at Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) defeated Sala Yoshida and Cindy Anders 8-3. Fernando went on to beat Anders in their No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-2. Oropeza dropped a close match to Yoshida at No. 1 singles 6-3, 7-5.

Freshman Meghan Houk (Corona del Sol HS) and No. 2 doubles partner Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) topped Isabell Camacho and Vanessa Mitrica 8-2. Houk won her No. 3 singles match over Stephanie Alsman 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS) played at the No. 4 singles spot and beat Camacho 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) earned her win at No. 5 singles as she defeated Mitrica 6-0, 6-2.

The Aztecs won the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches by default.

The Aztecs close out the regular season with two straight home matches. They will host Glendale Community College on Thursday at the West Campus Tennis Courts. The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
