Fitzsimmons and Shafer win consolation final at NJCAA National Tournament

The Pima Community College women's tennis team closed out the 2018 season on Wednesday at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Waco, TX.

The Aztecs advanced to three consolation finals. The Aztecs finished with a team score of 14 points and tied for 13th place out of 28 teams. They were the top ACCAC team as Eastern Arizona College was 19th with 11.5 points and Mesa Community College finished tied for 26th with 0.5 points.

Freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) and sophomore Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) earned two wins to claim the No. 3 doubles consolation bracket. In the final match, they earned a tie-breaker victory over Kelsea Baksh and Katherine Mitchell from Meridian Community College ((MS) 9-8 (7). The duo won their semifinal match over Martha Lucas and Molly Whitlock from Wallace State (AL) 8-4.

Freshman Meghan Houk (Corona del Sol HS) and sophomore Lien Nguyen advanced to the consolation finals in the No. 2 doubles flight after beating ACCAC rivals Payton Cap and Polly Evans from Eastern Arizona College 8-4. Houk and Nguyen lost in the finals to No. 6 ranked Maria Aveiga and Alena Macharova from Seward CC (KS) 8-1.

Houk lost in the No. 3 singles consolation finals to Ksenija Dmitrovic from Barton CC (KS) 8-2.

The Aztecs went 7-1 during the regular season and finished ranked No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA NJCAA Women's National Rankings.
